about

This song basically wrote itself. I had been listening to Yo La Tengo's Drug Test a lot, and in that song the narrator mentions listening to Wake Of The Flood on headphones. The phrase stuck with me, and not long after the whole lyric fell together without much editing. Engineer Blair did make a crucial edit that greatly improved the track.

lyrics

WAKE OF THE FLOOD by K. Dennis

Lives battered
A family shattered
Crushed by the weight of the fate
In the wake of the flood

Sittin' on the roof
I'm watching roots float by
Nothing can be set right
In the wake of the flood

Why'd I have to go and let the levee break?
Let that river of hurt engulf the plains
Why'd you have to go and never look back?
Won't you give me my last second chance?

Six feet high and rising
A great lake to the horizon
There on the wall, a water line
Marks the new beginning of time
In the wake of the flood
