WAKE OF THE FLOOD by K. Dennis Lives battered A family shattered Crushed by the weight of the fate In the wake of the flood Sittin' on the roof I'm watching roots float by Nothing can be set right In the wake of the flood Why'd I have to go and let the levee break? Let that river of hurt engulf the plains Why'd you have to go and never look back? Won't you give me my last second chance? Six feet high and rising A great lake to the horizon There on the wall, a water line Marks the new beginning of time In the wake of the flood

Jeff Bridges 02:54
JEFF BRIDGES by K. Dennis She said I'm tired of the way you been treating me It's just wrong, wrong, wrong She said you know it's not love why do you hang around The days drag on She said I'm looking for an answer I read books I rent videos I can't get to sleep and then I can't wake up Don't be surprised when I go She said you think no one would look twice at me Well you're wrong, wrong, wrong I'm gonna find a man who'll give me what I need Somewhere to belong She said someday there'll be a knock at the door And Jeff Bridges will be standing there He'll save me like he saved Jessica Lange You big ape, the neighbors will stare She said you're bad company, you tucker me out We're just wrong, wrong, wrong I'm gonna get fearless against all odds I'm sayin' so long She said I won't see you in the morning I've rented my last picture show I'm headin' out to find me a starman I'm headin' out to find my glow

PEACE OF MIND by K. Dennis She threw the bouquet out the car window Said "Pull over here, I'm out of this show" Fed up with the lies and little treacheries As the rush hour crushed the petals and leaves Peace of mind is what she's looking for Why is it so hard to find? Peace of mind is what she's looking for It's an uphill climb She's walking down the road cursing the luck Got to get control, got to get unstuck Got to find somebody with eyes that see The value of truth and decency Peace of mind is what she's looking for Why is it so hard to find? Peace of mind is what she's looking for Why is life unkind? Convenience store stop, pick up some butts Sittin' on a curb trying to figure what's what Why do people play these stupid games? Confusion is a cover - gotta be someone to blame Sometimes he felt bad about the pain he caused Hoped the roses would mask his flaws But the blossoms are broken, the fragrance is gone She's traded the flowers for a brand new dawn Peace of mind is what she's looking for Why is it so hard to find? Peace of mind is what she's looking for Why is life unkind? Looking for peace of mind...

SWIMMING IN BLUE STREETS by A. Bergey When the sun ain't shining And the rain is pouring down If you want to find me Well, you know where I'll be found When the clouds are hanging And the rain is pouring down And come Sunday morning Well, you know where I'll be found Chorus: Swimming in blue streets Keeping a line on the day Swimming in blue streets The night will wash me away Drop the beat of the day Once the rain's rhythm is found The leaves in the gutter Well, they are now in my sound When the weather's hanging Can't seem to make up its mind It's all right to follow Don't attempt to throw a line (Chorus) When the leaves are falling From the weight of the rain Although I do get sleepy I'm not about to complain When the sun ain't shining And the rain is pouring down If you want to find me Well, you know where I'll be found (Chorus)

GOODBYE CARL by K. Dennis Goodbye Carl The sun will never set on you You were more More than just a pair of blue suede shoes Get your cat clothes on Get down to the tonk to get dixie fried Goodbye Carl God only knows what we'll do now The trader sails on Taking the myth around the world Take that long promised road Down to the beach where the feel flows Goodbye Carl...

Sad, Sure 03:47
SAD, SURE by A. Bergey/K. Dennis Out of the blue I heard that Peggy Sue Had blown out her brains in a drainage ditch She used her dad's gun and erased the sun Just turned twenty-one but couldn't take anymore She was sad, sure - - but that's no reason to die She was sad, sure - - but that still don't answer why She paid her dues going to nursing school Peggy always wanted to help folks out But she was on her own, couldn't phone home 'Cause her Mom was dead and Dad didn't like her much I remember the night she drove into a parked car Looking for my house with a carload of girls Two years together then we drifted apart Hadn’t heard from her in months when I got the call She was sad, sure - - but that's no reason to die She was sad, sure - - but that still don't answer why Distress signals she sent friends didn't comprehend The vultures cleaned out Peggy's house the day she died She took her Dad's gun and chased her demons down Did she catch up with them? I guess we'll never know She was sad, sure - - but that's no reason to die (or is it) She was sad, sure - - but that still don't answer why If you knew Peggy Sue Then you'd know why I feel blue...

WORTHLESS BLUES by K. Dennis I've got the worthless blues I've got the worthless blues Worthless blues, right down to my shoes Got the worthless blues Don't know what to do I drive a worthless car To a worthless job I feel worthless when I get there And then when I leave at night I get the worthless blues Don't know what to do I could stay away And stay in bed all day I could jump in that car And take a drive to the country Very far But you can't drive far enough away To escape the worthless blues I've got the worthless blues Don't know what to do You feeling worthless? Then you've got 'em! The worthless blues Feeling worthless Right down to the soles of my shoe Feeling worthless Well I've got the worthless blues

about

The debut album from The Kevins, released in 1998. Since we're at the beginning, a thumbnail history is in order.

The advent of affordable home recording equipment in the early 1980s opened the door for many wannabe musical types. The ability to create near-studio quality recordings - outside the traditional studio at a fraction of industry costs - rapidly accelerated the spread of what's become known as "outsider" music.

The acquisition of one of these early home recorders - a mammoth four-track cassette machine - gave birth to one of those outside bands: Rank Amateurs (1985-1988). The appropriately named Rank was a songwriting/recording duo consisting of myself and the multi-talented Andrew Bergey. Three albums of songs that will always have a place in my heart were released on cassette. You can hear the entire Rank catalogue at Mr. Bergey's authoritative web site, The History Of Rank Amateurs: home.comcast.net/~a.bergey/rankamateurshistory.htm

Even while RA was working, Slowfist (1985-1997) emerged as a recording entity. Under that nom de plume, several cassette albums were issued to a miniscule yet unenthusiastic audience.

In the middle 1990s I had a two-year stint in a garage/basement-based cover band named As Is. That was a great learning experience - playing live, irregular rehearsing, egos rising. Validated were some theories on audiences and how to cover a hit tune. Yet the band was a dead end creatively, and it was time to move on.

As the digital age arrived for home recording, so did The Kevins. The debut album Looking For An Answer was assembled from several years of four-track tape productions and digitally mastered at a much nicer home studio.

The original 18-track album is presented here in an abridged form. It's better this way, trust me. The Kevins debut is definitely outside the norm (as in below par) sonically. The performances vary wildly and the packaging bears all the marks of a mediocre high school art project. But there are some good songs - the best ones have been recorded a couple of times.

It would take until the third Kevins album, Blue Hand, before the band discovered a consistent voice. But, like most debuts, Looking For An Answer was years in the making. The best songs made the cut, especially in this leaner, meaner version.

about

The Kevins Arvada, Colorado

The Kevins (Denver, CO) have been conjuring up home-made rock music since 1998: original songs by K. Dennis, tunes by friends & colleagues, and covers (Steppenwolf, Blondie, The Delfonics, Husker Du, The Banana Splits, more). Inspired by Neil Young, John Fogerty, Paul Westerberg, Ian Hunter and many more, The Kevins' continuing quest is to create the perfect single - or at least some cool b-sides. ... more
