My first encounter with this incredibly cool riff/tune was way back when via David Bowie's version on his Pin Ups album. At some point I acquired the original Kinks take. This song has it all - comedy, pathos and sincerity in one raggedly rocking package.

This version would not have happened without Dave Allen - thanks for playing this song over and over!
