about

Change The Game is the ninth full-length collection from The Kevins, and the band's first "double" album" (Exile On Gray Ct., maybe Arvada Calling?). The musical afterburners fired full blast in 2012: in addition to the Get A Job single and The Kinks covers ep, the band cranked out nearly three dozen other musical pieces. Twenty of them make up this collection.

While not a concept album, the title says it all: if the cards look stacked, change the game! The songs range from full-bore electric stomps to funky acoustic reveries, from spacey pop to imaginary soundtracks. Stories of dissatisfaction, recognition, and resolution unfold in The Kevins catchy rock, pop-punk and country-folk sounds.

Fourteen new original compositions are augmented by top-notch talents. Songwriter deluxe Andrew Bergey contributes three tunes, including two brand-new collaborations with the band. Covers of Aimee Mann, Lucinda Williams and Willie Nelson favorites were touchstones for the project, each song piercing in its own way. And Austin McLoughlin didn't write Sucker Punch, but he owns it. Click the individual songs for lyrics and other essential info.

Thanks to everyone for giving a listen to a most useful mantra: Change The Game!

about

The Kevins (Denver, CO) have been conjuring up home-made rock music since 1998: original songs by K. Dennis, tunes by friends & colleagues, and covers (Steppenwolf, Blondie, The Delfonics, Husker Du, The Banana Splits, more). Inspired by Neil Young, John Fogerty, Paul Westerberg, Ian Hunter and many more, The Kevins' continuing quest is to create the perfect single - or at least some cool b-sides. ... more

Track Name: Hooked Up
Tried to write a song about a life turned upside down
It wasn't too profound, just my time had come around
I'd hooked up with the wrong girl
Took too long to catch a break
Now time's running short don't want to make no mistake

Tried to write a song about a life lost and found
I can't make it too profound, I think our time has come around
I've hooked up with the right girl
She's got a smile that gets me high
I'd tell you more but she's waiting outside
Track Name: Fly Back To You
Feelin' jittery and tense and I know why
A love-borne virus got me destabilized
I can't shake this thing, an arrow on a string
Pulled back too far
I can't shake it loose, put my heart in a noose
And drop the trap door

I feel the virus comin' on and there's only one cure
Not a pill or a powder or acupuncture
There's just one thing that can end this string
Find a guiding star
I can shake it loose, slip my heart from this noose
As soon as

I take wing and fly back to you
Your sheltering heart is my refuge

Sweatin' starin' twitchin' bitchin'
What can I say
The cure has miles to go and days away
Cold turkey's got me in its sway

The jitters get worse when weeks go crawling by
Frustrates my brain I feel lobotomized
There's just one thing that can end this string
Find a guiding star
I can shake it loose, slip my heart from this noose
As soon as

I take wing and fly back to you
Your sheltering heart is my refuge
I take wing and fly back to you
The rhythm of our hearts stays steady and true
Track Name: Different Strategy
The twenty-eighth was a catastrophe
The ground opened up and tried to swallow me
I need to plan a different strategy

That's exactly what wasn't supposed to happen
That's exactly how it's not supposed to be

A comedy of errors and stupidly
Like a sheep I went along and too late I see
I need to plan a different strategy

That's exactly what wasn't supposed to happen
That's exactly how it's not supposed to be
That's exacly what wasn't supposed to happen
That is exactly how it's not supposed to be

I need to plan a different strategy
Track Name: Today I'm Buying
Lie to me - don't tell me the truth
Lie to me - don't make me deduce
Tell me you were kidnapped, taken down
By the CIA gone underground

Lie to me - can't stand what's in store
Lie to me - can't take anymore
Tell me you were washed away
To a desert island far away

Lie to me - shield me from hurt
Don't want to feel lower than dirt
Tell me you were held against your will
Down in a dungeon, stuck at a luncheon

Lie to me - get it off your chest
Start your story I'll fill in the rest
Tell me you were washed away
To a desert island far away

You can sell me anything
Because today I'm buying
Track Name: Tomorrow's Yesterday
How soon will the future end?
How long until today is done?
How soon can I see the end?
Will that day be as long as this one?
I'm ready for tomorrow's yesterday
I'm ready for tomorrow's yesterday

Why doesn't the sun rise when I want?
It was too early today
Why doesn't the night end?
Three a.m. is an hour away
I'm ready for tomorrow's yesterday
I'm ready for tomorrow's yesterday

How soon will the future end?
How long until today is gone?
How soon til tomorrow's yesterday?
How long til tomorrow's yesterday?
Track Name: Change The Game
What's it like when you feel
All you know is not real?
Can you imagine a world
Where truth is not the truth?

What I want us to do is
Break the chain try something new
Look me straight in the eye
Let's not hurt let's not lie
Change the game
Change the game

The more you know, the more you know...

What's it like when you feel
All you knew was unreal?
Look me straight in the eye
Let's try love let's not lie
Change the game
Change the game
Track Name: Lazy Old Lion
There's lots of animals at the zoo
Elephants and bears and kangaroos
And all kinds of monkeys, including baboons
There's a lazy old lion sleeping in the sun
When he wakes up his dream will be done
When he wakes up his dream will be done

He's dreaming of a place he can roam around
He spends his days sitting down
Watching the people walking by watching him
He's a lazy old lion sleeping in the sun
When he wakes up his dream will be done
When he wakes up then suppertime comes

Then one day the keepers gave him a shot
The lion went to sleep and when he woke up
He was in a strange place full of trees and sky and space
It looked like his dream, a place to roam
The people could watch but he could be alone
The lazy old lion liked his new home

There's lots of animals at the zoo
Elephants and bears and kangaroos
And all kinds of monkeys, including baboons
There's a lazy old lion sleeping in the sun
When he wakes up his dream will be done
When he wakes up his dream will be done
Track Name: Wayne Coyne
I'm at the airport heading for the gate
Got my rolling bag and ticket in my hand.
When over to the right, man that guy looks familiar
That hair, that coat, I know he's in a band
Yeah it's Mr. Flaming Lips, that's Wayne Coyne
His songs are sung in hundreds of lands
I walked straight up to him and said
"I can't believe you're here, thanks for the music,
I just want to shake your hand."

Wayne took my hand, said "What's your name, where you going?"
I told him and I asked, "How about you?"
"Off to New York City for a Broadway play by the guy
Who'll bring Yoshimi to the stage."
I should have said "Wayne, thanks for Fight Test
That song kills me every time it plays."
Instead I said "Wow, that's cool, well I gotta go"
And I turned and went off to catch a plane
Track Name: I Wanna Know When I'm Gonna Win
I wanna know when I'm gonna win
I wanna know when I'm gonna win
When will I feel the wind in my face?
Warm and close like a lover's embrace?

I wanna know when I'm gonna win
I wanna know when I'm gonna win
The Smiths sang about hearts crushed by the wheel
Let me get what I want, you know how that feels
I wanna know when I'm gonna win

It's true - I don't always lose
It's true - it's been too long since right beat wrong

I wanna know when I'm gonna win
I wanna know when I'm gonna win
The karmic waves aren't breaking my way
But I'm still here I'm not going away
I wanna know when I'm gonna win
Track Name: Western Regional Sales Manager
Got a new car, I got a big loan
A digital camera, some sort of phone
I got a rolex, and a high speed tablet thing
That I don't need

Got a mud room, and a panic room
Got more room than I'll ever need
Got a tack room and two pool rooms
Now I need more room

I must have got that promotion
To Western Regional Sales Manager
I must have got that promotion
Like in that dream I had at the Ramada

Pharmaceutical rep, I can show you the cure
I wanna be how you want me to be
Even if you're not sure

I must have got that promotion
To Western Regional Sales Manager
I must have got that promotion
Like in that dream I had at the Ramada

I wanna buy a pickup truck, so I can drive my crap around
I wanna buy a pickup coil, so I can sing in town

Got a mud room and a panic room
Got more room than I'll ever need
Got a tack room and two pool rooms
Now I need more room - collect my collections

I must have got that promotion
To Western Regional Sales Manager
I must have got that promotion
Like in that dream I had at the Ramada

I must have got that promotion
Like in that dream I had in Boise, Idaho
Track Name: The Nearly Quiet Orb
Walking along the beach line
The tar
The undertow, do not go
Too far

Me and my dog came upon
This Orb
Looking for life, it had ground
Ashore

It was quiet, we could tell
From here
It made a sound when we got
Too near

I have no doubt in my mind
That we
Stumbled upon a visit
At sea

Will they meet me? Will they meet
My dog?
We can sit down and talk by
The log

Start a fire if it don’t
Scare them
If they should leave hope they
Come again
Track Name: Coming Back
Slowly deflating like a leaky balloon
Sittin' at the terminal, you're gone far too soon
Now I'm floating down to the ground
Happens every time you leave town
But I hear you're coming back...

Pulled up to the house but I couldn't make myself go in
So I headed to the lake to get my heart pumping again
Had to feel it pounding right through my skin
So I know it's not broken, just a temporary thing

I stopped when a tree spoke to me
He said "I'm gnarled and old, weathered many storms
But I'm still standing, and so are you
Just keep walking til you meet again
Life is a circle, you'll meet again"

I hear you're coming back...

Just keep walking til you meet again
Life's a circle, you'll meet again
