Ripley the cat lived for twenty years after surviving a harrowing experience at the age of four months: a 12-hour highway ride clinging to the spare tire hanging under my brother's pick-up truck. I'm not saying he wasn't a little damaged by that - shaken kitty syndrome? At age 19, like many old men, long-deaf Ripley wandered from his digs and was "lost" for about nine months. Well, lost from us - the resourceful and charming guy found new humans nearby to care for him. Finally the Ripster returned to my family, and died peacefully a few months later. When I got the news, I picked up a ukulele and wrote an elegy for Ripley.
