about

Originally recorded by Rank Amateurs on their 1985 debut, the cassette-only album Scario.

Shades is a song that fellow Ranker Andy Bergey had ready to go when we were recording the tunes that became Scario. Mr. Bergey is an interesting songwriter - his tunes range from bubblegum-esque, non-stop comic puns to evocative descriptions of loss and melancholia, of which Shades is a top-notch example. The simple yet poetic lyrics and descending melody line deliver a musically effective portrait a protagonist slowly drawing the curtains on his life.

For The Kevins, Shades was an opportunity to throw in lots of musical ideas and production twists while still trying to preserve the almost-creepy, isolated feel of the lyrics. You can hear the original, stark Rank Amateur version, courtesy of Mr. Bergey's most excellent web site, here (scroll down to track four):

lyrics

SHADES by A. Bergey

You can't hide
I won't abide
I am in a dream
Find me here
No need to fear
I'm not what I seem

Sleep by day
And dream by night
Please do close the shades
Shades . . .

Stay in bed
And clear my head
The night time is mine
Stay in sheets
The day completes
I don't know the time

Live in bed
And die in bed
Please do close the shades
Shades . . .

Can't complain
About the rain
It blots out the rays
On my pane
It keeps me sane
For all of my days

Sleep by day
And dream by night
Please do close the shades
Shades . . .

Inspired by Neil Young, John Fogerty, Paul Westerberg, Ian Hunter and many more, The Kevins' continuing quest is to create the perfect single - or at least some cool b-sides. ... more
