about

Originally recorded by Rank Amateurs on their debut album, Scario (1985). The Rank was me and ace songwriter and vocal specialist Andrew Bergey, and this is a fine example of AB's pop smarts. Thwarted romance, dark humor and a propulsive melody all in one package!

You couldn't get much further "outsider" than the Rank - two guys with more ambition than aptitude, armed with a dinosaur four-track cassette recorder, bad microphones and no idea where to begin. Yet I love those songs! You can hear the original Rank version of Obituaries at the fab A. Bergey web site (scroll down to track seven):

MY NAME'S IN THE OBITUARIES by A. Bergey

I don't care what the paper said
I'm not even close to being dead
Got a feeling that's quite scary
My name's in the obituaries

But I'm not dead
My lovin' is though
Yeh I'm not dead
I watch it die slow

I don't care how the paper reads
I can tell when I'm the one that bleeds
They know something that I do not
Maybe my heart has started to clot

But I'm not dead
My lovin' is though
Yeh I'm not dead
I watch it die slow

I go downtown to give advice
Tell the paper they better be nice
Talk to a girl that sets me straight
I come home smilin' and with a date

So I'm not dead
My lovin' is though
Yeh I'm not dead
I’m comin' back slow

I’m not dead . . .

The Kevins Arvada, Colorado

The Kevins (Denver, CO) have been conjuring up home-made rock music since 1998: original songs by K. Dennis, tunes by friends & colleagues, and covers (Steppenwolf, Blondie, The Delfonics, Husker Du, The Banana Splits, more). Inspired by Neil Young, John Fogerty, Paul Westerberg, Ian Hunter and many more, The Kevins' continuing quest is to create the perfect single - or at least some cool b-sides. ... more
