Channel surfing down the music video channels, it's impossible to escape hip hop and r&b videos. Watching them with the sound turned down is really crazy - the imagery is often ultra-conspicuous consumption, with cars, women, inebriants mere playthings for the nearly all-male rappers. For a depressed forty-something (at the time) white suburban worker bee, this is a sex, drugs and rock & roll dreamland ripe for imagining song scenarios.

Hip Hop Star is of the few times the lyrics and music happened together - usually the music comes flying in and the lyrics are a struggle.
